Friendship Love

Proverbs 18:24 tells us “there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother,” and in the stories ahead you’ll see that reality played out across the pages of the Old and New Testaments. I often thank God for what I believe are some of His kindest, most generous earthly gifts: soulmate friends. While romantic love may grab the headlines, for most of us it’s the daily support and encouragement of our friends that fuels us.

My childhood friend Julie and I used to dress in matching blue and white checked dresses and sing duets everywhere from Sunday School to the race track (long story). And I have the most vivid memories of my middle school bestie, Michelle, and I making our annual multicolored Christmas cookies. There was also that all-night slumber party at Tara’s after she scored a copy of Michael Jackson’s Thriller album. It was heavy on dancing and squealing, not so much on the slumbering.

As I ventured into my college years, it was my friends who showed up when my heart got broken and when I somehow wound up on the stage at Miss America. They were there to encourage my fondest dreams, and to pick up the pieces when things didn’t go as planned. What a treasure to still have so many of them in my life! We’ve all gotten older, traversed some gut-wrenching tragedies, spoken truth to each other and celebrated a growing list of milestones. God gifted me with each of these confidants, just as we see Him do for His children throughout Scripture. And even in their imperfection, our friendships can point us to Him.
